On January 15, the gay news and politics magazine The Advocate returned to newsstands after two-years of only being available through subscriptions. The magazine’s editor, Matthew Breen, cites a specific moment when he realized that they had to get the product back on newsstands.
“When we did an Adam Lambert cover in November 2011, some enthusiastic Glambert posted fliers on Chelsea lampposts offering $100 for a single copy of the issue,” says Breen. “He had no subscription and couldn’t get his hands on an issue! An extreme example, but our readership wanted it back on newsstands.”
In addition to returning to brick-and-mortar retailers, The Advocate also recently launched a brand-new mobile web site using HTML5 and plans to continue growing digitally.
“There are still lots of isolated areas of conservative communities where gay media is a lifeline for people, literally,” he says.

Faye Dunaway, plus good advice: “I want all of you to get up our of your chairs, go to the window, stick your head out and yell, ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!’”

Michelle was looking awesome—and she delivered good side-eye. The bangs are growing on me.

Short answer:

What are your news sources?
I’m pretty voracious, but Twitter has emerged as a personal news ticker.

What do you think will be the biggest gay news story of 2013?
The Supremes taking up marriage equality will probably be the biggest, but “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal is still unfinished business, the Christians giving aid and support to the “kill the gays” thugs in Uganda, and ex-gay therapy on kids is still a disgusting scam that will be in the news. And Rick Santorum will come out after he’s caught in bed with both Gary Bauer and Jim Dobson.

What current marriage equality fights have you been watching the closest?
Binational couple immigration. My boyfriend is a foreign national, and even if we got married he could be deported since LGBTs have no federal marriage rights.

What’s in your fridge?
I almost always have Greek olives, Nutella, kale, frozen berries, and steaks.

What trend do you wish would die?
New forms of social media. My brain is full, and I’m not learning any more.

What is the most played song on your iPod right now?
“You Know Me Better” by Róisín Murphy

What’s your go-to drink?
Bourbon and soda with a twist.
