Fans are most likely to recognize Jaime Cepero as Ellis Tancharoen from NBC’s newest Glee counterpart, Smash, which premiered last Monday, but the up-and-comer got his break on the stage. “Working on a TV show is a whole other ballgame,” says the actor, who works alongside Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston, Katharine McPhee and Jack Davenport on Smash. “Theater is like, you rehearse for months, and then do the same thing every night. You find ways to have fun throughout the show by finding little nuances,” the 25-year-old notes.

Tonight, he’ll join friends Marti Gould Cummings and Kelly King on the stage for a night of Broadway crooning to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Which makes us curious—is he gay? Cepero plays pretty coy: “[That] question always makes me laugh. I’m singing in this concert because I am a friend of Marti and Kelly’s and I think what he’s doing is creating a positive reflection of the gay community,” he says, not entirely avoiding the question. “I’d perform in something like this regardless of whether I’m gay or straight.” —Alex Erikson
