Alas and alack, the fabulous Jarnac is no longer, yet another casualty torn from the formerly fetid landscape otherwise known as the Meatpacking District. Unfettered, owner Tony Powe of the erstwhile bistro united with the folks at Alias on the Lower East Side. Chef Alain Allegretti deserves a humanitarian award of some sort. His alchemic culinary mastery drove us into spasms of delight complete with wringing our hands and rolling our eyes, leaving us with a desire to shower him with kisses in thanks for serving his illicit divinations summoned from regions of Italy and the southern part of France. What a pleasure to simply be in the room that sommelier James Morrison graciously attends, so elegant and comfortably lit.

Alpha seems to be the newest hotspot in Chelsea—and why not? It boasts prime real estate in the heart of ’mo-town, is filled with food- and-booze-fueled memories of what used to be gay eateries Ate Ave, Judy’s, Helen’s and the wonderful Man Ray years before that. We’re placing our bets that this pan-Asian replacement—a much-needed addition to the gayborhood, is here to stay. And there’s talk of karaoke.
