DMFAOver?
We’ve danced our asses off a few times at Mark Nelson and Michael Formika Jones’ midtown party DMFAO, but those days may be long gone. We hear the party-promoting duo that originated the long-running The F Word is putting their latest venture on hiatus after just five weeks. A post on the party’s official Facebook page claims DMFAO is taking a “winter break,” but rumor has it Formika is returning to Splash on Friday nights to DJ The F Word, while Nelson is looking to start a Saturday night party in the absence of Club 57's exit.
It’s Gear, It’s Hear, Get Used To It!
The queer take-over of Ninth Avenue is well underway and gay-fave Universal Gear is the latest Chelsea staple to expand uptown. The D.C.-based owners of the Eighth Avenue boutique announced this week that they’ve signed a long-term lease with Modern Realty for a new Hell’s Kitchen space. The new store at Ninth Avenue and 49th Street will be Universal Gear’s New York flagship store and is slated for a May 2012 opening.
We’re Living For Sherry
here! TV is giving the classic TV variety show a new spin, with Sherry Vine at the helm. Premiering February 24, She’s Living For Thistakes its cues from old school shows like The Sonny and Cher Show and The Carol Burnette Show. The six-episode first season will feature guest appearances by major-league queer performers like Justin Vivian Bond, Joey Arias and Peppermint. And with Vine shepherding the whole thing along, you know you’re going to be living for this show as well.
Hugs Not Drugs
Chiming in on our coverage of Escuelita’s ongoing battle with New York State Liquor Authority, the owners of The Cock shed some light onto gay nightlife's continued battle to keep foul play outside there bar:
“We have worked directly with the police to eradicate this problem, and they have literally set detectives on the roof of the Cock at times to monitor, record and observe this situation. The miscreants in question actually stand away from our building lines, as we don't let them stand out in front of our legal property lines. And we need to mention that they are outside, not inside our bar, because we have a zero tolerance policy inside and a super strict door and ID policy for entrance.”
Let's hope these "miscreants" can take their trouble elsewhere and let everyone enjoy the dive favorite and other under-investigation spots.
