(Jake Shears & Ana Matronic @ High Bar)
Ana Matronic promised to make love to Terminal 5 last night, when the Scissor Sisters played their second and final New York show. (She was schooling us about objectsexuals, those who seek physical relationships with man-made structures.) Well, she and the boys gave the venue the ride of a lifetime—and then some—with a mind-blowing, ass-shaking set that included new tracks "Fire With Fire" and "Any Which Way" as well as old faves like "Take Your Mama Out" and "Laura," and two rousing encores.
After packing the Midtown venue with a cross-section of hipsters, homos and disco enthusiasts, the hometown gang high-kicked it over to High Bar for an intimate though still star-studded after-party, which doubled as a benefit for LifeBeat, the music industry's response to the AIDS crisis. “You never know what you’re going to get with New York [crowds]” said a positively glowing post-show Matronic. “People might be having it until the break of dawn or they’ could be standing there and fanning themselves with their sunglasses saying ‘Prove it to me! Prove it to me!’” she said as Adam Lambert strolled by and congratulated her on a job well done. “Thankfully in our case, people were having it! We worked really hard to get that adulation. We’re the kind of band that feeds off the crowd. The more insane people get in the audience, the more insane we’ll get on stage!”
Lambert was not the only of-note at the concert or after-party as a flaming-haired Justin Bond arrived coiffed quite similarly to Miss Matronic and Parker Posey nestled in next to Lambert exclaiming “I’m not a breeder! I’m a movie star!” The real surprise, though, was California Gurl Katy Perry, who was evidently less-than-tactful in her adulation of the band’s signature style. “I had Katy Perry go down on her knees after the show tonight!” Matronic confided. “She bowed down to me and proceeded to tell me she was going to be ‘stealing some things’ from me. So if you see things that look vaguely Ana Matronic-esque you know where they came from…” All you homos out there still comparing vintage Madonna photos to current Lady Gaga spreads better get out your magnifying glasses! The newly svelt Matronic could certainly swap clothes with the “Peacock” singer, so perhaps a co-tour is in their future.
The Sisters still have plenty of stops to go on their current tour, but Ana confided there's one place she'd love to hit. “I’m going to lose so many gay points for this," she said, "but I’ve lived in New York for over 10 years and I’ve never been to Fire Island.” Coming from a band with a song like “Whole New Way To Love You” on their current album, Night Work—which uses images of sailors and sex in the woods, we'd be lying if we said we weren’t a little shocked by her revelation. “Next year, next summer. You can hold me to it!” she told us. Perhaps it could be the start of a Meat Rack concert series? – Christopher Dilley
