(Mocha Lite and Misty Meaner at Eastern Bloc)
Ernie Cote’s Tuesday night party Spunknik rang in its second anniversary at Eastern Bloc last night with a low key, but still somehow high-energy party. All manner of queens showed up to toast the party’s terrible twos, though surprisingly few showed up in full drag.
“How does a queen know when Spunknik is?” Misty Meaner asks us, rhetorically. “It’s when you have a good amount of spunk in a room!”
We can’t vouch for the amount of spunk in the bar—we’re not that kinda girl—but we can tell you who showed up to the party! Misty and Mocha Lite shared hosting duties, busting out a couple performances on Eastern Bloc’s stripper pole for good measure. Cote and Matty Glitterati were on the decks, spinning pop and comfortingly old school hip-hop. Dotted around the bar were Brooklyn queens like BackSpace’s Krystal Something Something and Charmin Ultra, dressed down for the evening. Former Spunknik host Jeff “Little Horse” Poulin—who also used to make all of the party’s flyers—showed up in a fox stole and grey leopard print jumpsuit with one of his signature raptor cameos dangling from his ear and the Daisy Spurs’ Liz Riga on his arm. Lee Chappell, Demanda Dahling, Lee Clayton and Jason Preston all made appearances as well.
Cote teased us with plans and surprises that he made us swear not to print, but Misty wasn’t nearly as tight-lipped. It seems she has a bone to pick with a certain nightlife photographer, and when we asked her for a quote about Spunknik, she snuck in this jab:
“Spunknik Tuesdays is the best night you’re ever gonna experience in your life! It’s better than when a bad photographer photographs you and then calls it good photographing because he edited it and it’s all off and, like, your legs look ugly and stuff. It’s like that kinda high of a bar!”
We couldn’t help but notice her necklace spelling out “meow” in little bejeweled letters. Meow indeed, Misty! —John Russell
