Sluts Anonymous - Randall Park, Karin Anne Cheung and Wilson Cruz in The People I’ve Slept With

Time Investment: 89 min.
Return on Investment: 35 min.

The People I’ve Slept With (People Pictures) has a lot of potential, but its spunky premise—accidentally pregnant slutty girl plans wedding while finding and testing potential fathers/ grooms—is unfortunately stinted by an awkward sensibility and inconsistent acting. The writing is also hit or miss; aside from some requisite pithy one-liners, much of it seems trite even though it needn’t be.

A lot of People’s weight is on Karin Anna Cheung as Angela, the aforementioned pregnant slut, but she doesn’t seem to truly embrace what makes her character so different. Instead the film just seems to go through the motions of the abundant mildly entertaining sexual scenarios that come up. It’s a pleasure to see Wilson Cruz, and in such good shape, too, but in playing the gay stud who learns to love, he can’t quite shake sensitive Rickie Vasquez from My So-Called Life, whom we remember and love.

As it unfolds in episodic segments where Angela sets out to get a telltale sample from each of her recent fucks any way she can, the film turns out to be rather like our slut/heroine’s supporting players: cute but not too interesting (one exception is the hilarious Korean-American ‘Nice but Boring Guy’, played by standout Randall Park). Maybe Angela likes her escapist adventures short, sweet, and forgettable, but comedy bonbons should leave us wanting more, not less. Nice soundtrack, though! —Dan Heching
