The Right Track

By Keo Nozari

Songs about overprotective boyfriends seem to be a theme this summer! First there was Jennifer Hudson’s “Spotlight;” now comes “Surveillance” by newcomer Wynter Gordon—and both song and artist are things you’ll want to keep an eye on. Gordon already made a name for herself as a songwriter penning the title track from Mary J. Blige’s Breakthrough album and “2 of You” for Danity Kane’s latest, Welcome to the Dollhouse. There is no suspicion that Gordon is a great solo talent and “Surveillance” has a clever hook reminiscent of Rihanna at her best. Signed to Atlantic Records, the Jamaica, Queens native’s first album, Wynter, is scheduled for release later this summer and includes impressive writing collaborations with Dianne Warren and The Dream and producers including Bryan Michael Cox (Mariah Carey, Usher). In addition to relationship issues, Gordon skillfully tackles some deeper social commentary as well on songs like “Unity” (check out Myspace.com/wynter85 and see what we mean). The gay-friendly artist has already made several singing appearances thanks to Steve Sidewalk at his Hot Mess parties. So hopefully she’ll be bringing some cool Wynter to more hot gay summer parties again soon!

Another gay-friendly female we totally love is Lady Gaga, who we’ve given lots of ink to in this column. Her album The Fame is definitely on our “must-have” list this summer with our favorite tracks including “Love Games” and “Nothing I Can Say (Eh Eh).” The Interscope artist has some “boot mixes” circulating of her first commercial single “Let’s Dance” by Lost Daze, Dan Mackie and more that include cameos by local scenesters Cazwell and The Ones and even a mash-up with New Order by Earworm.

The voice behind French superstar producer and DJ David Guetta is the openly gay and golden-voiced Chris Willis. Currently powering up American Top 40 radio with Guetta’s “Love is Gone,” Willis is currently on a tour of North America promoting not only his Guetta hits (including “Just a Little More Love” and “Love Don’t Let Me Go (Walking Away)” (can you tell he loves love?) but also his own solo material. A CD sampler of his work that came across our desk includes “My Freedom,” which features a well-used sample from the 1984 hit “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker Jr. Now, will a song about surveillance be far behind?
