GOSSIP ROUNDUP: Justin Bond Bites At "New York," Gumbo Goes North, Dita Von Teese teams up with Shequida and Bianca, and MORE!

WORD IS BOND
Justin Vivian Bond is lashing out at what the performer says is an offensive feature profile in this week’s New York magazine. In a blistering blog post on JustinBond.com, the performer—who is promoting his debut album, Dendrophile—took issue with the story’s “tone and what I consider to be extremely aggressive gender policing.” Bond also had harsh words for Chaz Bono, whose docu-series, Becoming Chaz, premiered on OWN last night. Bond accused Bono of “fighting progressive gender roles and re-affirming the binary with every step of his transition.” Burn!

GUMBO-WUMBO
Promoters Ben Harvey and Casey Fitzpatrick are set to serve up some Gumbo in Williamsburg. Dumbo’s premier gay soiree’s new Williamsburg off-shoot, Billy, launches with a one-off event May 19 at The Counting Room on Berry Street. DJ Kevin Graves dishes up the beats while mixologists serve bespoke cocktaisl like the Red Light Companion (Genever, Campari and vermouth)  and Vanishing Sun (rhum agricole, grapefruit, mint, honey, maraschino, angostura and orange bitter). If Billy is as successful as Harvey and Fitzpatrick's flagship party, they might make it a regular thing. And hey, there’s no cover!

You'd think that starting a new party in the middle of a snowy nor'easter would be a misstep.  Well, not if you're the guys behind Gumbo— their new Wednesday night feté in the Financial District, Gekko, started off with a bang...not to mention some rumbles of thunder.  Located in the cozy confines of Gild Hall's upstairs bar, Gekko had an intimate, friendly vibe with well-dressed boys mixing-and-mingling in the the lovely wood-paneled "library."

| More

(Ben Harvey)

A year after launching, Brooklyn’s Gumbo party is doing so well, it’s cloned itself—now you can get your drink and dance on the first Friday and third Thursday of the month. The party has attracted a diverse crowd of hotties, but who does promoter Ben Harvey want to stop into Galapagos? “I'm dying for Andy Roddick to hit up Gumbo with his wifey, Brooklyn Decker. They live in the neighborhood now,” he says. “So does The City’s Olivia Palermo. That's it—we're putting a bounty out on them! Free drinks for life if you can get Roddick or Palermo to Gumbo!”

(Ronnie Kroell for Next Magazine)

THE LIONS’ SHARE
Who doesn’t love a little star-fucking with Broadway hotties? Make it for a good cause and you couldn’t keep us away. On August 30, Pieces is hosting a charity karaoke night hosted by Vodka Stinger, where cast members from The Lion King will belt out numbers alongside regular folk. It’s just a dollar a song, or $20 if you want to jump the line. The beneficiary of this hot night is 11-year-old Shannon Tavarez, who played Nala in the hit musical and has been diagnosed with leukemia. Feel good and do good, that’s what we say!

LIVE…FROM NEW YORK!
It’s always a hoot when we’re invited to enter a sweepstakes to win a trip to New York. (Ooh, maybe we’ll get to take one of them Circle Line tours of the Harbor!). But reality star/Playgirl pin-up Ronnie Kroell is working on a Big Apple contest that we might just take a bite out of.  If you make a $125 donation to HRC on Kroell’s site, you’ll receive one of fifty different prize packages, with a chance to win a weekend with Ronnie in New Yawk. (Everyone gets a signed copy of Kroell’s Playgirl issue and the 2008 Instinct magazine he appeared in.)  Other top prizes include a pair of S2VS Gold Jeans, signed by Lady Gaga, a DVD of Make Me a Supermodel and a personal call from Ronnie thanking you for your support (hubba hubba).

(Nick Kennedy, Scott Laborsky & Mike Garten @ Galapagos Art Space)

“It’s a cool, collected, Brooklyn vibe,” said DJ Josh Sparber at last night’s GUMBO at Dumbo's Galapagos Art Space. “Kind of a 'later than after-work and earlier than dancing till four in the morning’ crowd." Usually the party features a stylist giving gratis haircuts, but this month’s installment brought a twist with free flipbooks being provided by PS122. “Ben Harvey put the party together. People love them, they get up on the stage and walk like an Egyptian” said Sparber.
