The Beginner’s Guide to Rubber

Six tips to get you ready for Mr. American Rubber 6.
April 09, 2014
On April 19, Rockbar will be full of latex-loving gays competing in the sixth annual Mr. American Rubber contest. But for those rubber neophytes out there, there’s a lot to learn about this fashion fetish. Mr. American Rubber winners Bob Robert (2012) and Joe Coloff (2013), a.k.a. Pup Joe, have some tips to get you started.

1. New to rubber? Start small.

“I always say, start with something small like a jacket, a T-shirt, or if you want more coverage, a pair of shorts,” Coloff suggests. “Then if you are totally into it, try to purchase separates. You can achieve the look of a catsuit over time with a pair of leggings and a long-sleeve shirt.” Robert agrees: “Start simple to see if you like it, then move up.”

2. Easy does it.

“Just because rubber stretches doesn’t mean it should,” Coloff says. “Take care when putting it on or taking it off. Rubber does have a point where it will stop stretching, then it will start to discolor or rip.” Robert advises easing into your gear slowly, using lube to help it glide on.

3. Absolutely no baby oil!

“Do not use baby oil to lube or shine your rubber,” says Robert. As with condoms, oil-based lubricants will break down latex clothing. Instead, use silicone-based lube or lubes specifically designed for rubber to shine your gear and help slip it on more easily.

4. Fold, don’t hang.

“Hanging around in rubber is fun, just don’t hang your rubber around for too long,” Coloff warns. “Rubber can stretch out over time if it is left on a hanger too long.” Only leave your rubber hanging long enough for it to dry after rinsing and washing it. Then, fold it and store it in plastic bags with plenty of talcum powder to reduce friction.

5. Don’t cut costs.

According to Robert, “Good rubber is not cheap and cheap rubber is not good.” If you’re serious about building a rubber wardrobe that will last, save up for quality pieces.

6. Rubber is for everyone.

Coloff admits that a hot body looks great in rubber. But, he says, even if you don’t have a porn star physique, you should still feel comfortable enough to enjoy your gear. “There are many companies who can make rubber to fit,” he points out. “To me it’s just as hot to see someone enjoying their fetish and embracing who and what they are.”
