Steven Brinberg as Barbra Streisand
Taking time off from her busy schedule writing, directing and starring in the new big-screen adaptation of Gypsy, the diva herself, Barbra Streisand, will be dropping by the series Broadway at Birdland (315 W 44th St, BirdlandJazz.com) on Sep 9 to celebrate her good friend and collaborator, Marvin Hamlisch. That is, she’ll be dropping by in the form of Steven Brinberg as Simply Barbra. But this time Brinberg returns to Birdland with a new show, Mostly Marvin, overflowing with Hamlisch classics and rarities including “The Way We Weren’t” and “Hearts Not Diamonds,” plus a few gems from the score of Funny Girl—the show that originally brought Hamlisch and Streisand together. Also this month at Birdland: The Pop Show Presents…Michael Jackson! Sep 16, the return of Montgomery, Mayes and Stritch on Sep 23, Amanda Green on Sep 29 and Jeff Harnar Sings – Alex Rybeck Plays: The 30th Anniversary Show on Sep 30.
From Sep 10–28 the lovely and talented Sutton Foster returns to The Café Carlyle (35 E 76th St, TheCarlyle.com) to open their fall season. And 54 Below (254 W 54th St, 54Below.com) boasts their usual impressive lineup of stars this month, including Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, John Tartaglia, Lindsay Mendez, Emily Skinner, Morgan James, Frances Ruffelle and songwriting duo Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. Skinner’s show in particular, Broadway, Her Way, on September 11–12, should prove terrific.
