When it comes to doing drag, if you’re not someone who does it frequently or professionally, getting good insider tips on what to do and what to avoid is crucial. Just as important? Where to go to get your outfit. So as you prepare for the Fourth of July’s annual Invasion of the Pines, we picked the pro’s brains about where to get all of your queenly accessories.

Make-Up

“Skip Ricky’s. Alcone (322 W 49th St, AlconeCo.com) has the best in make-up supplies, whether you need industrial-strength glue for your lacefront or just a bolder color of eye shadow than drug stores typically sell,” advises Lady Bunny. Acid Betty agrees: “Take that man and hide him away under some theater make-up!” But if you’re on a budget, Sherry Vine says a lot of the stuff at drug stores will do the trick. “Anything Maybelline from CVS [works]. Also you can get nails, etc at CVS or Duane Reade,” she says.

Wigs

“Get your hair did at Beauty 35 (508 Eighth Ave, Beauty35.com),” recommends Acid Betty. “Or Wigs and Plus (152 W 32nd St, 123Wigs.com) has every stylish hairdo under the sun—and extensions for the gods!” Wigbar (431 W 54th St, Wigbar.com) is where it’s at for luscious locks, says Sherry Vine. “Isaac does all my hair in my videos,” she notes.

Dresses

“Here’s a little secret I’ll share with you: Reminiscence (74 Fifth Ave, Reminiscence.com)—a New York staple—recently moved to 13th [Street] and Fifth [Avenue]. This vintage funtopia is packed with campy costumes, accessories and fabulous vintage items, all reasonably priced,” Paige Turner gushes. She says you’ll be able to find everything from a square dance outfit to Cinderella’s ball gown. “Or if you want to look like a cheap whore,” quips Acid Betty, “go to Ricky’s!”

Accessories

Spent all your money on your wig, dress and makeup? “Check out Earrings Plaza (1263 Broadway, 212- 685-5666) near Broadway and 32nd Street for dirt-cheap, often gigantic earrings for a couple bucks,” Lady Bunny insists. “They hand you a shopping basket for a reason—you can’t turn down these prices. Especially if it’s a one-time wear like Invasion.”
