After years of feeling like New York’s gay scene lacked an alternative to clubs and bars, and listening to his friends complain about doing the “same old, same old” every night, promoter Joey Israel decided to do something about it. Last June, he launched Guy Social NYC (GuySocialNYC.com) to provide curated events for New York gays looking for a change of pace from dancing until 4am every night and then hitting up Grindr on the walk home.

“We wanted to start off with fun, exciting events that appealed to a wide range of tastes, while also introducing our concept easily,” says Israel. “A core belief of what Guy Social stands for is that everyone is welcome—no judgments. Our previous events reflected that belief with guys of various ages, body types, scenes, backgrounds and tastes.”

After a Field Day outing in Central Park this summer, the group went on a short hiatus. But with a pool party and game night last week at the Grace Hotel, their schedule is now booked with a “curated event” every month through next summer. Next month, Guy Social will be throwing a D.I.Y. ugly sweater party. After that look for a pajama party, a gay ice skating day, a clothing swap and a gay prom to follow.

“If you’re looking for potential dates, gaining some new life-long friends or perhaps even snagging your future boyfriend or husband [Guy Social is for you],” says Israel. “In the interactive, activity-based environment we provide, you could have an hour or two to really get to know someone and make a more explored decision.”

For a discount at every event, as well as deals at a number or retail, dining, hotel, spa and gym partners, you can purchase a $20 annual Guy Social membership—though it isn’t required to attend any of the events. It’s something you might consider more seriously after hearing Israel’s last bit of advice.
