Hunx’s Favorite Homopunks

Hunx and His Punx front man Seth Bogart

After a two year hiatus in which Seth Bogart and Shannon Shaw each recorded solo albums, San Francisco homopunk band Hunx and His Punx is back with their third album, Street Punk. It’s a filthier, meaner collection of songs inspired by ’80s hardcore and ’90s riot grrl, with Bogart and Shaw sharing song writing and vocal duties. There’s even a Beastie Boys cover (1982’s “Egg Raid on Mojo”) thrown in for good measure. With the band kicking off their U.S. tour August 8 at Williamsburg’s 285 Kent we got Bogart to give us a rundown of his top ten favorite queer punk bands.

1. LIMPWRIST

“My number one fave gay punk band.”

2. THE DICKS

“Famous for their song ‘The Dicks Hate the Police.’ Later the singer formed Gary Floyd’s Hard Again.”

3. THE GERMS

“[Singer] Darby [Crash] was gay. He loved giant dicks. Why is it a secret?”

4. TRIBE 8

“Lynn Breedlove is such a genius. So cool. Now he has a queer taxi service in San Francisco called Homobiles.”

5. FIFTH COLUMN

“I am totally obsessed with G.B. Jones, from her J.D.s fanzine to this band. Fave song: ‘Detox Killer (Erotic Thriller).’”

6. BLACK FAG

“Vaginal Davis’ legendary band. Their ’90s album Passover Satyr was produced by Kim Gordon.”

7. STA-PREST

“Loved them in high school. Like new wave ’90s music with organs and sexy lesbo lyrics about Vespa sex.”

8. LESBIANS ON ECSTASY

“Such a great live band! Played with them in Paris in 2005 with my old band Gravy Train. And again in 2012 in Austria with Hunx and His Punx.”

9. LE TIGRE and MEN

“For the JD Samson factor.”

10.THE BIG BOYS

“Featuring singer Randy ‘Biscuit’ Turner who passed away in 2005. R.I.P.”
