Ital-Portuguese meatballs at City Sandwich are made with a special Portuguese ingredient, Alheira, which is a chicken and pork vinegar sausage. Since it might be a hard ingredient to find, chef Michael Guerrieri modified the ingredients for us to make it easier. Serves 4.
Ingredients:
½ lb ground chicken
½ lb ground pork
1 cup chopped broccoli rabe,
steamed or sautéed
1 chopped garlic clove
3 Tbsp finely chopped onions
3 Tbsp tomato paste
5 Tbsp white vinegar
1 Tbsp of smoky sauce (optional)
2 eggs
1 cup breadcrumbs
Salt and pepper
Procedure:
1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Wash your hands and mix it old-fashioned style.
2. If the mixture seems a little soft for rolling the balls, add some more breadcrumbs.
3. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
4. Continue rolling to preferred size and simply pan sear, roast in an oven with a little drizzle of olive oil, steam or simply drop them raw in a pot of stewing tomato sauce. Now that’s what Guerrieri calls “Ital-Portuguese!”
