Pick Me Up

A good pick-up line—like a good man—is hard to find.

Pick-up lines are as old as desire itself. Early versions of “Excuse me, don’t I know you from somewhere?” and “Is it hot in here, or is it just you?” can be found throughout ancient history, mythology and literature. Even when Narcissus hit on his own reflection, he used what was basically the ancient Greek equivalent of “What’s a nice guy like you doing in a lake like this?” I’m pretty sure the first words ever spoken by mankind weren’t “Look out! Dinosaur!” or “Give me food,” but something like “Hi, I’m Adam. Nice apples.”

Breaking the ice isn’t easy. A pick-up line should be casual but not passive, memorable but not cliché, confident but not desperate, suggestive but not creepy. But who can really deliver a come-on like “I’m wasted, but this condom in my pocket doesn’t have to be,” or “What does a guy have to do to get a foot in the door with you—and by a foot, I mean 12 inches,” or “What luck: You look like you don’t have much body hair, and I’m the kind of guy who doesn’t like to beat around the bush.” So most guys just fall back on innocuous openers like “Are you from around here?” (instead of “Your legs must be tired because you’ve been running through my mind all night”), “So what are you up to tonight?” (instead of “My name is Marcus—remember that, because you’ll be screaming it later”) or “You have the most amazing eyes” (instead of “I’m gonna call you piñata, because I gotta hit that”).
Some of the most memorable pick-up lines originated in Hollywood, like the classic “Is that a pistol in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?,” attributed to iconic actress/sex symbol Mae West—though not from one of her films, as is often mistaken.
Sadly, though, it seems the golden age of pick-up lines is dead. After all, nowadays, the most creative pick-up line guys can come up with—and by far the most popular cyber-age ice-breaker out there—is “Wassup?” But in case you aspire to pick-up line greatness, see if you can correctly match the following cinematic pick-up lines with the corresponding actor/movie. You’ll be all the more suave for it.

Quotes

1. “Ma’am, in the leopard-print dress, you have an amazing rack.”
2. “You’re good-looking, you got a beautiful body, beautiful legs, beautiful face, all these guys in love with you. Only you’ve got a look in your eye like you haven’t been fucked in a year.”
3. “[Y]ou, miss, are no lady. Don’t think that I hold that against you. Ladies have never held any charm for me.”
4. “Excuse me, miss. I just want you to know that I don’t intend to sleep with another woman until I’m back here in your arms with my head resting between your creamy thighs.”
5. “I really wish that you’d come home with me. You’re so cute and I’m really good in bed. Believe me. You smell good too.”
6. “I don’t exactly know what I am required to say in order for you to have intercourse with me. But could we assume that I said all that? I mean, essentially we are talking about fluid exchange, right? So could we go just straight to the sex?”
7. “You know, I could lay a big line on you, and we could do a lot of role-playing, but the simple truth is I find you very interesting and I’d really like to make love to you.”
8. “[I]t is very difficult for a man to even speak to someone who looks like you. I mean, you’re sending all the right signals—no earrings, heels under two inches, your hair is pulled back, you’re wearing reading glasses with no book, drinking a Grey Goose martini, which means you had a hell of a week and a beer just wouldn’t do it. And if that wasn’t clear enough, there’s always the “fuck off” sign that you have stamped on your forehead.”
9. “Let me ask you a question. And be honest. Do I make you horny, baby?”
10. “I don’t know how to put this, but I’m kind of a big deal.”
