Summer wouldn’t be complete without a trip to a big gay trip to an amusement park. Each year, New York and New Jersey area gays take over Six Flags Great Adventure and Safari for Fairgrounds: Out at Night. The annual event is always a blast, and this year’s benefits the World Wide Fund for Nature, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and Philly’s Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance. We asked the event’s hosts and DJs to highlight their favorite areas and dish about what kind of shennanigans go on after all the straight folks go home.
1. MOVIETOWN
Fairgrounds’ ultra-gay after-dark party night kicks off with DJs Joey Z, Steve Sidewalk, Kimani G, and a special guest from 8pm to 10pm, making you work it out.
2. MAIN STREET
Grammy-nominated DJ and producer Dave Audé spins the main party of the night from 10pm until the park closes at 2am. He’s joined by house and dance-pop DJ Ultra Naté.
3. KINGDA KA
Three-time Fairgrounds host Dina Delicious says the event is “always such an energetic night surrounded by community. There is so much love and no attitude.” She has some particularly hilarious memories of roller coaster Kingda Ka, thanks to an unconventional phone storage location: “We put our cellphones in my breasts, and when we got off the screens were cracked. That was classic.”
4. EL TORO
When he’s not DJing in Movietown, Steve Sidewalk “flirts with sexy Latin guys while waiting on line for El Toro,” the DJ shares. “Hey, I’m a Taurus and I like Latinos—it’s the perfect ride for me!”
5. NITRO
Sidewalk is also a big fan of this super-fast, twisting coaster. “I love the drops and the questionable placement of the safety restraint. You’ll see what I mean when you ride it: the bar mostly covers your crotch!”
6. BATMAN
Host Sasha Seven says that Fairgrounds “attracts a hot crowd from the tri-state area,” who can usually be found cruising in line at this superhero rollercoaster.
7. THE FOUNTAIN
Host King Ralphy has the “best time” every year at Fairgrounds, whether it’s “being chased around the main fountain by a chainsaw man from Fright Fest or being peer-pressured into riding roller coasters by every DJ, host, and celebrity guest—and then still not going because I lie and say I’m too short!”
