Sports Quickies: August 2012

Liberty Belles: The 2012 Liberty Open was a huge success with over 200 players battling it out for titles in each of the 20 events. Metropolitan Tennis Group hosts the annual tennis tournament and this year they raised money for two worthy organizations: Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY) and MCCNY Homeless Youth Services. Gay Dog Show: The NYC Gay Hockey Association’s Boxers were down 3-0 in the first seven minutes of the ir regular season game against the Rampaging Moose. The handsome namesakes of the popular Chelsea sports bar clawed their way back up to 3–2, then tied the game up with two minutes left in regulation time. And with only eight seconds left on the overtime clock, Shawn Bauder put in a wild one, winning the game 4–3. Meanwhile, the Westies pulled out an exciting 7–4 win behind a solid performance by spry, young goaltender Grant May. The mysterious “Q” had two goals and an assist, bringing the team record up to 7–4–1 in their premiere season at Sky Rink, where they currently sit in second place in their division. Master-runners: Front Runners New York Masters/Vets team had a great showing in the July 14 CPC Run for Central Park. Steve Vizena, Patrick Guilfoyle and Richard White all double-scored for the 40+ and 50+ teams to earn ninth place in the 40+ competition and third place in the 50+ race. More at FRNY.org.

Back-Board: The NYC Gay Basketball League welcomes a new Board of Directors for the 2012–2013 term. After serving five years on the board, Jeff Kagan has retired as commissioner and passed the torch to Joe Dudash. Mike Kokell, Evan Ignall, Vince Moten, Tony Lerro and “Treasurer Nick” will keep the league going strong this year. Registration for the fall division opens in late August.
