Sports Quickies: October 2012

October Balls: The New York City Gay Basketball League’s Fall 2012 season is off to a bouncing start. Led by captain Earl Heffintrayer, The Miller Lites are dribbling away, leading the Boxers B Division with three straight wins. The Fenwick-Keats A Division has been hot with Splash Bar and Boxers NYC both going 3-0. Does Splash have a plan to shut down the league-leading scorer, Patrick Kearns? Only the bookies know. The Life Aquatic: Coach Onesimo de Mira earned first place, and four other TNYAs turned in stellar performances in the Splash & Dash in Douglaston, Queens, on September 16. It was Onesimo’s second time winning the Splash & Dash, and in addition to being a fine swimmer he’s an accomplished runner and triathlete. TYNA.org.

Pawtucket Pitchers: The Gym Bar Titans took home the trophy at the Ocean State Cup Classic softball tournament in Providence, RI on Columbus Day Weekend. They were undefeated throughout the tournament, and since the championship game was rained out, were declared the winners. In the final winner’s bracket game, The Titans went into two extra innings to beat the Boston Diablo 5-4. BigAppleSoftball.com.

Run, Front Runners, Run: Front Runners New York is the proud recipient of the Overall Second Place Aid Station Award for their work on the aid station at Mile 17 of the run portion of the U.S. Ironman Championships on August 11.
