The summer concert season kicks off this week with The B-52s’ May 21 show at Irving Plaza. Oh Land returns to the city for a May 25 show at Bowery Ballroom, while legendary rock band the Pixies play two nights at Beacon Theatre, May 26 and 27. On the 30th, Banks and St. Lucia play Webster Hall as part of New York Magazine’s Vulture Festival, and on May 31 Chaka Khan plays the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
If you can’t make it out to Jersey, catch Chaka Khan June at the Prospect Park Bandshell as she kicks off Celebrate Brooklyn. Marina & the Diamonds’ June 5 show at Webster Hall may be sold out, but Governor’s Ball kicks off that same day. Florence and the Machine, St. Vincent, and Charli XCX are among the acts playing Friday, June 5; Björk, Marina & the Diamonds, Kiesza, and others play Saturday, June 6; and on Sunday, June 7, the festival closes with performances by Lana Del Rey, Hot Chip, and many others. June 10 finds Belle & Sebastian playing Radio City Music Hall, while Cheyenne Jackson takes the stage at Town Hall on the 12th. Damien Rice plays the Prospect Park Bandshell on June 17 and in Huntington, NY, lesbian icon Melissa Ethridge plays the Paramount Theater on June 18. Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett’s Cheek to Cheek tour arrives at Radio City Music Hall on June 19, while New Kids on the Block take the stage at Madison Square Garden June 21 and 22. Also at MSG, catch Bette Midler live, June 25 and 26, and Morrissey on June 27. And on June 29, Ingrid Michaelson plays Central Park’s SummerStage.
On July 1, Basement Jaxx play Central Park’s SummerStage. Matt Alber stops by Joe’s Pub on July 8, The New Pornographers play the Prospect Park Bandshell on the 11th, and Tyler, the Creator plays Irving Plaza on the 12th. Kelly Clarkson plays a two-night stand at Radio City Music Hall, July 16 and 17, Neon Trees play Irving Plaza on the 22nd, and on the 23rd Little Boots plays Bowery Ballroom. On July 25, Jay Brannan takes the stage at Joe’s Pub. It’s a summer of long-awaited reunion tours: first there’s Culture Club’s double header at Beacon Theatre July 27 and 28, and on the 31st Veruca Salt’s original line-up plays Webster Hall.
Queer performer Taylor Mac kicks off the month of August with his tribute to 20th Century pop music at the Prospect Park Bandshell. On the 5th Killers frontman Brandon Flowers plays a solo show at Terminal 5, while Father John Misty plays Central Park’s SummerStage. The 2015 Mad Decent Block Party hits Brooklyn’s MCU Park with Die Antwoord, Major Lazer, and others on August 8, and Tyler, the Creator and others on the August 9.
