Sports Quickies: July 2012

Chelsea Challenged: The New York City Gay Hockey Association hosted their 12th Annual International LGBT Ice Hockey Tournament June 15–17 at Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers. The Louisville Llamas beat the Pittsburgh Tigers to take the Developmental division championship. In the tournament’s biggest nail-biter, the Recreational B division NY Knights eked out a hard-fought win over the Triborough Blaze. And in the Recreational A division, the Jets took the gold over Les Dragons de Montréal. NYCGayHockey.org.

Proud Participants: Twenty of the New York area’s LGBT sports and recreation organizations marched proudly in the Heritage of Pride March on Sunday, June 24. Swimmers, runners, ruggers, skaters, kickers, climbers, servers, spikers, dodgers, catchers and cheerleaders strutted down Fifth Avenue in style, showing the world that LGBT athletes are just as fabulous as their non-LGBT competitors.

Sleeker Sneakers: Front Runners New York congratulates Ruth Loos and Thomas Hammer, winners of the 2012 Steve Gerben Awards for being the first female and male FRNY members to finish their annual Pride Run, which was held on June 23. Ruth double scored as the fastest female masters Front Runner as well, earning her the Mickey Zacuto Award. Richard White is the male Mickey Zacuto Award winner for his performance in the Pride Run. Teenya of the Month: The Board of Directors of Team New York Aquatics have named Scott Kohanowski as their Teenya of the Month. Scott has been a strong advocate for diving and has continued to support the diving team as it has developed into an integral part of TNYA. Scott is a multiple medalist at IGLA, winning gold medals in both swimming and diving. Congratulations! TNYA.org.
